The title piece alone—a tale of a law student trapped in a house with a judge’s ghostly decree—is a masterclass in dread, blending legalistic language with supernatural menace. My favorite was *The Squaw*, a darkly funny revenge story where a man’s casual cruelty spirals into something far worse. Macready’s narration elevated these stories even further; his delivery of the judge’s cold, rhythmic taunts in *The Judge’s House* gave me literal chills. He has a knack for pacing, letting the silence between sentences hang heavy with anticipation, which makes the eventual scares hit harder. That said, *The Judge’s House* drags slightly in the middle, with a few too many passages of exposition that slow the momentum. Stoker’s Victorian sensibilities also mean some of the humor feels dated, though Macready’s performance softens the edges. The real strength here is the variety—no two stories feel alike, from the psychological horror of *Crooken Sands* to the folkloric terror of *The Gipsy’s Prophecy*. The runtime is short enough to binge in one sitting, but each story lingers like a bad dream. By the final track, I was sold on Stoker’s range as a writer and Macready’s as a narrator.
