About This Audiobook

Michael Moorcock’s *The Knight of the Swords* isn’t just another sword-and-sorcery tale—it’s a fever dream of cosmic melancholy, where the last survivor of a dying race wages war against gods who’ve already won. This dramatized adaptation amplifies the novel’s raw, poetic fury with a full-cast performance that turns Corum’s quest into something visceral. The voice actors—particularly Nick DePinto as Corum—deliver a haunting mix of exhaustion and defiance, their performances steeped in the kind of world-weariness that only Moorcock’s doomed protagonists can muster. The sound design leans into the surreal: clashing blades echo like distant thunder, and the gods’ taunts slither through the mix with unnatural clarity.

What sets this apart from typical fantasy audiobooks is its refusal to romanticize. The Vadhagh aren’t noble elves; they’re relics of a universe that’s moved on, and the audiobook’s production mirrors that decay. The pacing is deliberate, almost funereal in places, forcing you to sit with Corum’s grief between bursts of violence. If you love fantasy that’s more *Blood Meridian* than *Lord of the Rings*—where the hero’s triumph is measured in stubborn survival, not glory—this is your kind of crusade.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I went into *The Knight of the Swords* expecting another Moorcock antihero slicing through enemies with detached cool. What I got instead was something far more unsettling: a man (or whatever Corum is) who’s already lost, swinging his sword at fate itself. The full-cast narration sells this despair beautifully. Nick DePinto’s Corum sounds like he’s speaking from the bottom of a well—hollow, but with a razor’s edge of fury when provoked. The supporting cast, especially Tracy Olivera as the enigmatic Rhalina, adds layers of ambiguity; you’re never sure if they’re allies, pawns, or just fellow ghosts in this dying world. The production shines in its atmospheric risks. The gods’ voices are distorted just enough to feel *wrong*, and the battle scenes avoid the usual chaotic din in favor of something more ritualistic—like each clash is a step toward an inevitable end. That said, the pacing *will* frustrate some listeners. Moorcock’s prose is dense with philosophical asides, and the audiobook doesn’t always smooth them out. A few transitions between scenes feel abrupt, as if the adaptation struggled to balance the novel’s introspective lulls with its sudden violence. And while the sound design is immersive, the mix occasionally buries key dialogue under ambient noise (a sin in any audiobook). Still, this is a rare case where the flaws feel intentional, part of the book’s bleak charm. If you’ve ever wanted to hear what it sounds like when a hero fights not for victory, but for the right to keep failing, this is your audiobook. Just don’t expect to walk away unscathed.
