The Jakarta setting isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a character, drenched in humidity, bureaucracy, and the kind of infrastructure that’s both fragile and stubbornly persistent. Jamie Renell’s narration sells the shift from clinical detachment to existential dread flawlessly; his voice cracks just enough during the ‘oh shit’ moments to make them land like a gut punch. The audiobook’s 9+ hours fly by because the tension rarely lets up, though a few secondary characters blur together in the first act—by the midpoint, I stopped caring because the larger mystery swallowed everything whole. Where the book stumbles is in its third act resolution, which leans hard into techno-jargon that risks alienating listeners who aren’t fluent in hard sci-fi. Still, the payoff (and the sheer audacity of the reveal) made up for it. Renell’s performance keeps the emotional beats sharp even when the plot gets murky.
