About This Audiobook

Emylia Hall delivers a masterclass in tightly coiled suspense with *The Rockpool Murder*, a cozy mystery that never once feels cozy. Set against the jagged cliffs of Cornwall, Rockpool House becomes the claustrophobic stage for Baz Carson’s 70th birthday—until the birthday cake is barely cold and the rock star patriarch is found dead in his study. Hall’s prose is razor-sharp, weaving a web of secrets where every guest, from Baz’s estranged daughter to his alcoholic former manager, harbors motives sharp enough to cut glass. The audiobook’s slow-burn tension is masterful; you’ll find yourself glued to your headphones as the layers of deceit peel back, revealing a truth more jagged than the coastline itself. Kristin Atherton’s narration is a revelation—she doesn’t just voice the characters, she inhabits them, from the gravelly drawl of Cornish fishermen to the brittle tones of Baz’s socialite wife. The result is an audio experience that crackles with authenticity, making the chilly Cornish air feel like it’s brushing against your skin. If you’ve ever wanted a mystery where the setting itself feels like a character, this is it.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Kristin Atherton’s narration is the secret sauce that elevates *The Rockpool Murder* from a solid whodunit to an immersive experience. She nails the regional accents—especially the grittier, less polished Cornish tones—without overdoing the stereotypes, which could have easily veered into parody. Her pacing is impeccable, too; the slow unraveling of secrets feels organic, never rushed, and her ability to shift between characters, from the icy Martha (Baz’s second wife) to the sweary, heartbroken daughter, adds layers to the story that the text alone wouldn’t achieve. That said, the production isn’t flawless. The sound levels dip a little too low during some of the more tense indoor scenes, forcing me to lean in uncomfortably close to my phone’s speakers. And while Hall’s plotting is clever, the resolution leans a touch too heavily on a trope I’ve seen too often: the “hidden second will” twist. That’s nitpicking, though. What lingers is Atherton’s performance and Hall’s knack for making a familiar setting feel fresh. If you’re a fan of mysteries where the scenery is as much a part of the puzzle as the characters, this is one to add to your queue.
