He nails the balance between Berrington’s clipped English rationality and the creeping paranoia that grips him as the bodies mount. The narration is especially strong in the quieter moments, where Topping lets the silence hang heavy, letting the listener marinate in the dread. My only gripe? Some of the secondary characters, particularly the Spanish officials, sound so interchangeable in their vocal delivery that I had to rewind to remind myself who was who. A minor quibble, but noticeable in a book where every name and title matters. The story itself is a masterclass in slow-burn tension. Penny doesn’t rush to solutions; instead, he lets the mystery fester like an untreated wound. The historical setting is richly detailed without ever feeling like a textbook—Garnatah isn’t just a backdrop but a character in its own right, a city where the scent of spices masks the stench of corruption. The twist involving the Sin Eater’s true identity is clever, if a tad predictable for seasoned mystery readers, but the journey to get there is so immersive that it barely matters. That said, the ending left me wanting more—Berrington’s final confrontation felt rushed, as if the story had run out of steam just when it needed to deliver its most potent blow. Still, the audiobook’s production and Topping’s performance elevate it from a solid mystery to something genuinely haunting. If you love your thrillers with a side of historical authenticity and a narrator who doesn’t phone it in, *The Sin Eater* is a must-listen.
