Mills writes dialogue that *bites*, and Carrie Coello delivers it with the perfect mix of exhaustion and defiance. Her performance sells the humor (the protagonist’s internal rants about aristocracy are *chef’s kiss*) and the horror (the demon scenes are *legitimately* creepy, thanks to Coello’s layered, rasping voices). The plot’s strength lies in its refusal to sand down the edges. This isn’t a ‘found family’ story—it’s a survival game where trust is a liability. The magic system, tied to demonic bargains, feels refreshingly *costly*, and the academy setting avoids the usual tropes by making the ‘villains’ bureaucrats, not mustache-twirling tyrants. My two critiques: the mid-act twist involving a secondary character feels slightly rushed, and the romance subplot (minor as it is) doesn’t quite earn its emotional beats. But the heist itself? Flawlessly executed, with a finale that leaves you grinning—and immediately checking if the sequel’s out. If you love audiobooks where the narrator *becomes* the protagonist, and stories where the heroine’s biggest weapon is her own stubborn cynicism, this is a steal.
