About This Audiobook

Nancy E. Turner’s *The Star Garden* is a rugged, immersive sequel that deepens the saga of Sarah Agnes Prine, now navigating the brutal Arizona Territory with the same stubborn resilience that made *These Is My Words* a classic. Turner’s prose crackles with authenticity—every dusty trail, scorching noon, and flickering campfire feels visceral, as if you’re hauling water from a distant creek yourself. The story isn’t just about endurance; it’s about the quiet, relentless choices women made to carve out lives where none ought to exist. Whether Sarah’s planting crops in alkaline soil or outmaneuvering predators of the human variety, Turner refuses to romanticize the West, instead painting it as the harsh, unpredictable beast it was. This is frontier fiction that demands you feel every ounce of grit along with every ray of hope. Laura Hicks’s narration is the secret weapon here—her voice, warm yet weary, carries the weight of decades, whether Sarah’s whispering to a newborn or snarling at a rattler in her path. Hicks doesn’t just read lines; she inhabits the role, making Sarah’s triumphs and stumbles feel like your own, heard through the filter of a woman who’s seen too much to lie about it.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I started listening to *The Star Garden* on a cross-country flight, half-listening to the safety demo and half-lost in Laura Hicks’s gravelly, honeyed drawl as Sarah Agnes Prine’s story unfolded. By the time the plane touched down, I was already emotionally knackered—desperate to know if Sarah’s fledgling homestead would survive the monsoon, her marriage, or the next bandit who rode into camp. Hicks’s performance is nothing short of masterful; her Sarah isn’t some wide-eyed pioneer girl but a woman who’s learned the hard way that mercy is a luxury in the territory. The production itself is crisp, with just enough ambient sound (the creak of a wagon, the distant howl of a coyote) to drop you into the 1880s without drowning out Hicks’s nuanced delivery. That said, there were a few moments where Turner’s flashbacks to Sarah’s earlier life felt like narrative speed bumps, jolting me out of the present-tense immediacy of the Arizona narrative. And while I appreciate Hicks’s talent, her occasional forays into exaggerated Southern drawls for secondary characters sometimes veered into caricature territory. But these are minor quibbles. The real magic of this audiobook is how it makes you ache for Sarah—not just for her losses, but for the way she keeps getting back up, dirt under her nails and stubborn hope in her bones. If you’ve ever wondered what it took to survive the West, this is your story, told with unflinching honesty and a narrator who makes you believe every word.
