I started listening to *The Star Garden* on a cross-country flight, half-listening to the safety demo and half-lost in Laura Hicks’s gravelly, honeyed drawl as Sarah Agnes Prine’s story unfolded. By the time the plane touched down, I was already emotionally knackered—desperate to know if Sarah’s fledgling homestead would survive the monsoon, her marriage, or the next bandit who rode into camp. Hicks’s performance is nothing short of masterful; her Sarah isn’t some wide-eyed pioneer girl but a woman who’s learned the hard way that mercy is a luxury in the territory. The production itself is crisp, with just enough ambient sound (the creak of a wagon, the distant howl of a coyote) to drop you into the 1880s without drowning out Hicks’s nuanced delivery. That said, there were a few moments where Turner’s flashbacks to Sarah’s earlier life felt like narrative speed bumps, jolting me out of the present-tense immediacy of the Arizona narrative. And while I appreciate Hicks’s talent, her occasional forays into exaggerated Southern drawls for secondary characters sometimes veered into caricature territory. But these are minor quibbles. The real magic of this audiobook is how it makes you ache for Sarah—not just for her losses, but for the way she keeps getting back up, dirt under her nails and stubborn hope in her bones.
