About This Audiobook

Nathan Ballingrud’s *The Strange* isn’t your usual Mars colonization yarn—it’s a slow-burn descent into psychological horror disguised as hard sci-fi. When the Silence cuts off Earth’s transmissions, the colony’s fragile grip on sanity unravels within weeks, not years. The story follows Anabelle Crisp, a 14-year-old whose survival instincts sharpen as adults succumb to paranoia and violence. Ballingrud’s prose crackles with dread, blending the claustrophobic tension of *The Martian* with the uncanny dread of Bradbury’s *The Martian Chronicles*. The real star here is Mars itself: a rusted, silent antagonist that twists human desperation into something monstrous. If you crave space opera that lingers in your bones long after the hatch seals shut, this is your next obsession. Lyssa Browne’s narration is a masterclass in restraint, her voice cracking just enough to sell Anabelle’s terror without overplaying it. The production leans into the isolation—every crackle of static, every measured breath feels intentional, making the Silence feel like a physical presence. It’s the kind of audiobook that demands your full attention, rewarding close listening with chills that hit like a dust storm at 200 kph.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical going in—another Mars story? But Ballingrud’s voice is so assured, his worldbuilding so meticulous, that I was hooked within the first chapter. Browne’s narration is the cherry on top; her Anabelle isn’t a precious teen heroine but a raw, flawed survivor, her voice trembling with real terror. The Silence isn’t just plot convenience—it’s a character, and Ballingrud weaponizes it masterfully, making you *feel* the colony’s suffocating dread. The first act moves like a glacier, but that’s the point: the pacing mirrors the slow rot of sanity as the characters grasp at explanations that don’t exist. That said, the ending is *just* short of transcendent—it resolves with a gut punch rather than a knockout, leaving some threads tantalizingly loose. And while Browne’s performance is stellar, her male voices occasionally slip into caricature, which pulled me out of the tension once or twice. Still, these are minor quibbles for a story that lingers like the dust on Mars: fine, heavy, impossible to shake.
