I’ll admit I’m a sucker for Commissar Cain’s particular brand of cowardly heroics, but *The Traitor’s Hand* had me questioning whether his luck—or his ego—would finally run out. The way the Slaaneshi cult’s manipulations mirror Cain’s own insecurities is downright chilling, especially in Stephen Perring’s hands, where every sarcastic quip feels like a desperate shield against the abyss. The supporting cast shines too; Rawlins’ portrayal of Cain’s old Schola Progenium rival, Major Kasteen, crackles with a mix of fond exasperation and genuine danger, while Spooner’s oily cultist leader slithers through the narrative like a pit viper in a priest’s robes. The pacing is relentless, with just enough breather moments to let Cain’s patter land before the next gut-punch twist. My only nitpick is the occasional over-reliance on Cain’s internal monologue, which can make some plot turns feel a bit too telegraphed. And while the full-cast production is exceptional, the sound design occasionally veers into *over*-the-top Warp energy during climax scenes, risking a campy edge when the story demands pure dread. That said, these are minor quibbles in a performance that otherwise nails the balance between grimdark horror and grim humor. If you’ve made it this far in the series, you’ll love the depths *The Traitor’s Hand* drags Cain—and you—through. Newcomers might want to start earlier, but be warned: this one will leave you questioning whether you’d survive half as well as the Commissar does… or whether you’d even *want* to.
