Lily Prescott is a masterclass in contradiction: a woman who flees across the Atlantic with a tattered heart but never loses her nerve, trading vulnerability for strategy with every calculated smile. Harding nails the pacing—fast enough to keep you hooked, but never so rushed that the emotional beats falter. The secondary characters, from the brooding viscount with secrets of his own to the sneering debutantes who underestimate Lily at their peril, add delicious layers of conflict. That said, the romance’s resolution felt a tad too neat for my taste; I wanted a few more scars left on the page. As for the narration? Virtual Voice nails the duality here, modulating between Lily’s dry, sarcastic inner monologue and the crisp, polished tones of London’s elite with effortless skill. The production is clean, the pacing tight, and the only downside is the occasional odd emphasis on minor words—nothing that derails the immersion, but enough to jolt you out of the moment if you’re listening closely. Still, by the end, I was fully invested in Lily’s gambit and cheering for her every step of the way. A standout in a crowded genre, and proof that historical romance can be both frothy and fiercely intelligent.
