From the moment Tracey Conyer Lee's voice fills your ears, you know you're in for a ride. She has this incredible ability to imbue the protagonist, Eleanor, with a growing sense of dread that feels utterly authentic. You're right there with her, questioning every whispered word, every lingering glance. Williams masterfully builds this tension, not through explosive plot twists right out of the gate, but by meticulously layering Eleanor's unease, drawing you into her isolation. The narrative skillfully weaves in the presence of the titular 'wife before,' a ghost that looms large, shaping Eleanor's present and future in ways she can't yet comprehend. What I particularly appreciated was the deliberate pacing. It allows the psychological elements to breathe, making the eventual revelations hit with far more impact. While the story is undeniably gripping, there were moments in the middle where the internal monologue felt a touch repetitive, almost circling the same anxieties without significant forward momentum. However, Lee’s performance consistently elevates these sections, her nuanced delivery preventing them from becoming truly stagnant. The final act, though, is a masterclass in suspense, delivering a satisfyingly dark payoff. This is a book that stays with you, long after the final chapter.
