Mayhem and the Mortal

I went into *Mayhem and the Mortal* expecting another fantasy chase scene stretched thin over 16 hours, but Shanora Williams punches far above her weight. The worldbuilding is relentless, not in the way of lore dumps, but in the way a storm batters you: relentless, unpredictable, and impossible to ignore. The Shallows isn’t just a setting—it’s a character, a living, breathing nightmare that twists its rules just when you think you’ve figured them out. Zaira’s voice is the audiobook’s greatest strength: she’s cynical, exhausted, and so damn stubborn she’ll drag her sister through literal hell before admitting defeat. That stubbornness costs her, though. Williams doesn’t shy away from the fallout, and the emotional toll on Zaira feels earned, even when it’s brutal. Joniece Abbott-Pratt’s narration elevates this from great to unforgettable. Her performance is a masterclass in vocal restraint—she never overacts, but every sigh, every muttered curse, every strained whisper lands like a punch. My one quibble? Some of the side characters blur together, especially in large group scenes where accents and cadences converge. A few more distinct vocal tics for key players could’ve sharpened the clarity. But the production itself is stellar, with immersive sound design that makes you feel like you’re slogging through the muck right alongside Zaira. If you want fantasy that respects your intelligence and your endurance, this is it—just bring snacks and a strong stomach for the ride.
