About This Audiobook

In 'The Wilderness', McKay Coppins takes listeners on a gripping journey into the soul of the Republican Party. This is no dry history or partisan diatribe – Coppins' vivid storytelling plunges us into the midst of a fractured party's desperate bid for relevance. With every twist and turn, we're drawn deeper into the machinations of party leaders, their egos, and their agendas. Coppins' reporting shines in this riveting narrative, where the personal and the political blur.

Through Coppins' masterful storytelling, we witness the birth of the Tea Party, the rise of the Never Trumpers, and the cunning strategies of players like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. But 'The Wilderness' isn't just about the GOP's struggles – it's a nuanced exploration of what happens when a party loses its way and its connection to the American people. Will they find their footing, or will they forever be lost in the wilderness?

Narrator John Glouchevitch delivers a masterful performance, bringing Coppins' characters to life with nuance and depth. His pacing is measured, and his voice is warm and inviting, making this 14-hour journey feel surprisingly concise.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I've spent countless hours listening to politics-focused audiobooks, but 'The Wilderness' is one of the most compelling I've encountered. Coppins' storytelling is simply exceptional – he weaves a complex narrative that's both engaging and informative. Glouchevitch's narration is a huge part of this audiobook's charm; he brings a sense of empathy and understanding to Coppins' characters, making it easy to become invested in their struggles. One of my only criticisms is that the audiobook could benefit from a clearer structure. At times, the narrative feels a bit meandering, and it's not always easy to discern which story thread is the most important. However, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise exceptional audiobook. If you're interested in American politics or the inner workings of the Republican Party, 'The Wilderness' is an absolute must-listen. Coppins' reporting is top-notch, and Glouchevitch's narration brings the story to life in a way that's both captivating and thought-provoking.
