Time Enough at Last

I went into this expecting another recycled Twilight Zone retread, but Venable’s story caught me off guard with its emotional precision. Benny Crunch isn’t a hero or a villain—he’s just a guy who loves books a little too much, and the Mills’ narration sells it. Bill Mills’ portrayal of Benny is achingly human, his delivery oscillating between dry humor and genuine sorrow with unsettling ease. Roxanne Mills’ turns as the other voices (especially the brief but chilling moments with Helen) add texture without overpowering. The production is intentionally sparse, which works until the final act when the lack of immersive sound design makes the climax feel a bit flat. That said, the story’s power lies in its restraint—the quiet devastation lingers long after the audiobook ends. The Mills duo nails the tone, but the abrupt ending left me wanting just a little more narrative closure. Still, for 25 minutes of pure speculative fiction, it’s a masterclass in economical storytelling.
