I’ll be honest: I went into *Timecaster* expecting another *Minority Report* knockoff, but Konrath subverts that trope by making the time-tech *flawed*. Talon’s TEV doesn’t just solve crimes—it creates ethical landmines. When he replays a murder only to realize the victim *deserved it*, or when corporate overlords edit the timeline for profit, the story morphs from sci-fi procedural to a bleak meditation on power. Lawlor’s narration is the secret weapon here. His Talon sounds like a guy who’s seen too much but still cracks wise, a perfect match for Konrath’s dialogue (example: *“I don’t do happy endings. I do *accurate* ones.”*). The action scenes sing—Lawlor’s rapid-fire delivery during a TEV-assisted shootout had me rewinding to catch every tactical detail. That said, the audiobook isn’t without stumbles. The romance subplot feels tacked on, a rare misstep in Konrath’s usually tight plotting, and Lawlor’s female voices occasionally dip into caricature. The worldbuilding also assumes you’ll buy into its tech jargon without much hand-holding; if you’re not a hard sci-fi fan, the TEV’s mechanics might leave you scratching your head. But these are quibbles. The real draw is the *vibe*: a neon-noir hybrid where every character has an angle, and the line between cop and criminal is drawn in erasable ink. If you love your sci-fi with a side of moral ambiguity and a narrator who sounds like he just stubbed out a cigarette on a corpse, this is your jam.
