About This Audiobook

Joseph Locke’s life is a dumpster fire—until he gets hit by a drunk driver and wakes up in a world where magic is real, quests are mandatory, and his only skill is sarcasm. *Titan Mage* is Edie Skye’s sharp, irreverent take on the portal fantasy trope, blending the wit of *The Good Place* with the chaotic energy of a *Discworld* romp. Locke isn’t some chosen one; he’s a reluctant, foul-mouthed everyman who stumbles into power like a drunken bar fight. The world-building is vivid but never bogged down in lore, and Skye’s humor lands like a well-aimed pie to the face—never mean, always funny.

The real star here is the narration. Daryl Mayfield’s portrayal of Locke crackles with exhausted exasperation, his delivery making every sarcastic quip feel like a punchline you’ve been waiting to hear. Jess Trepanier’s supporting voices—from the smug archmage to the perpetually confused sidekick—add layers without overacting. Together, they turn what could’ve been a gimmicky premise into a rhythmically paced, laugh-out-loud adventure. If you’ve ever wanted a fantasy hero who’d rather complain than fight, this is your audiobook.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Titan Mage* expecting another forgettable portal fantasy with a “chosen one” trope. What I got was a snarky, surprisingly heartfelt romp that subverts every cliché while still delivering the cozy feels. Joseph Locke isn’t just a relatable protagonist—he’s the kind of guy you’d follow into a bar fight just to watch him argue with the bouncer. Daryl Mayfield’s narration sells it all, his dry delivery matching Locke’s internal monologue so well that I caught myself laughing aloud at 2 AM. Trepanier’s side characters, especially the villainous noblewoman with a voice like smoldering embers, add depth without stealing the show. That said, the world-building occasionally trips over its own feet. Certain magic systems feel under-explained, and a few plot threads (like Locke’s “magical debt”) get resolved with a shrug instead of a satisfying payoff. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise polished production. The pacing never drags, the humor lands consistently, and—most surprisingly—the emotional beats actually hit. It’s rare for a book this funny to also make me care about its characters, but *Titan Mage* pulls it off. If you love funny fantasy with bite and don’t mind a few rough edges, this is the audiobook for you.
