Yung-I Chang’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon: she’s part voice actor, part hype woman, and all in on the chaos. Her Leon starts as a resigned, dry-witted everyman, but as his predicament escalates, her vocal range explodes—equal parts exasperated sighs and manic giggles when he’s steamrolled by another heroine’s demands. The female cast is a masterclass in tonal whiplash: from saccharine schoolgirls to ice-cold executives, each voice drips with distinct personality, making the love interests feel like real people instead of anime archetypes. That said, the production hiccups undercut the immersion at times. There are a few instances where background music swells awkwardly (looking at you, abrupt battle-sim stingers during romantic confession scenes), and the sound mixing occasionally flattens out during rapid-fire dialogue, forcing me to rewind twice for context. Still, the energy never flags—Chang’s commitment to the bit keeps the listener hooked even when the plot meanders. If you’re here for clever deconstructions of dating sim tropes, you’ll be satisfied, though readers craving depth over hijinks might find the pacing uneven. The ending, in particular, lands with a thud rather than a bang, as if Mishima ran out of steam mid-climax.
