I approached *Treatise on Tolerance* with the skepticism of someone who’s heard one too many grand declarations about “universal values,” but Artur Mas’s narration immediately disarmed me. His voice has a gravelly authority, like a professor who’s smoked one too many cigarettes but knows exactly how to hold an audience. The way he delivers Voltaire’s most biting lines—especially the famous “Écrasez l’infâme!”—feels less like reading and more like eavesdropping on a furious, brilliant man mid-rant. The production is clean but unpolished, which works in its favor; the lack of overproduced music or effects means you’re fully immersed in Voltaire’s words, not distracted by studio gimmicks. That said, Mas’s occasional over-enunciation of French phrases grated on me—it’s the one moment this otherwise masterful performance stumbles, as if he’s trying too hard to signal “authenticity.” Still, the audiobook’s greatest strength is its urgency: Voltaire’s arguments about the arbitrariness of religious violence and the necessity of secular reason feel not just relevant but urgent. By the end, I wasn’t just convinced—I was ready to picket the next book burning.
