Take his chapter on the Black Dahlia: instead of rehashing the gory details, he examines how the case became a Rorschach test for 1940s America’s fears about women, sexuality, and urban decay. That’s the kind of depth that makes this audiobook worth your time. The Virtual Voice narration is polarizing. Its flat affect works surprisingly well for the book’s academic bent, but during emotional testimony (like family interviews in the JonBenét Ramsey section), the lack of human nuance feels jarring. Still, the production is crisp, with no distracting edits or volume fluctuations. My only real critique? The final chapter on modern ‘digital mysteries’ (like the *Cicada 3301* puzzle) feels tacked on—Blackwood’s strength is historical context, and the shift to cyber-enigmas lacks the same rigor. But when he’s dissecting, say, the *Zodiac Killer*’s letters through the lens of 1960s media hysteria, *Unsolved* is as gripping as a thriller—just one where the villain is the void itself.
