I’ve listened to a lot of fantasy audiobooks, but *Veil of Starlight* stands out for its ability to make the opulent feel dangerous. The Lumina court isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a pressure cooker of ambition where every smile hides a blade. Kaela Ashryn is a protagonist who earns her scars—both physical and emotional—and her relationship with her sword feels intimate, like a lover’s touch. The narration by Virtual Voice is eerily perfect, capturing Kaela’s steely resolve and the decadent menace of the world with equal skill. The pacing is tight, though I occasionally found myself wishing for a breath between fight scenes—this book doesn’t waste time on filler, which is a double-edged sword. On the flip side, the magic system’s rules aren’t always crystal clear, which left me frowning at a few key moments. Still, the production quality is immaculate, with a soundscape that immerses you in the world without overpowering Evergreen’s razor-sharp writing. If you want fantasy that’s as intellectually stimulating as it is action-packed, this one’s a winner.
