About This Audiobook

Judy Blundell’s *What I Saw and How I Lied* is a sun-drenched noir draped in the innocence of postwar America—except innocence is just a veneer. Evie Spooner’s stepfather returns from WWII with a new Cadillac and a headful of secrets, and their Florida vacation quickly curdles into something darker than sunburned skin and tropical drinks. The prose crackles with the tension of a family teetering on the edge of a cliff they didn’t see coming, and Blundell’s knack for hiding truth in plain sight makes every page a slow-motion unraveling. It’s a coming-of-age story where the adults are the real wolves in sheep’s clothing, and the betrayals sting harder than any sunburn.

The audiobook’s sharpest asset is Caitlin Greer’s narration, which nails the precarious balance between teenage naivety and creeping dread. Greer’s Evie is wide-eyed but not wide-eared—her voice drips with the kind of youthful curiosity that makes her eventual disillusionment hit like a gut punch. The production is crisp, with Florida’s heat practically radiating through the speakers, but it’s Greer’s ability to pivot from playful to petrified in a single breath that turns this into an audio experience worth your time.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical about a YA novel set in the 1940s—how much damage could a teenager’s perspective really do? The answer is: plenty, when the teenager in question is Evie Spooner. Blundell crafts a world where the lines between family, fraud, and felony blur with the kind of subtlety that makes you question every character’s motives, including your own assumptions as a listener. Greer’s narration is the secret weapon here: she nails Evie’s initial giddy optimism, but it’s her quieter, shakier moments—where Evie’s voice cracks like a teenager who’s suddenly too old for her own good—that’ll have you pausing to catch your breath. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles. The middle third drags like a lazy afternoon under a hotel’s ceiling fan, and the resolution, while satisfying, wraps up a little too neatly for a story this morally murky. Still, those flaws are minor compared to the novel’s strengths—the way it weaponizes nostalgia, the way it makes you root for characters who are, at best, deeply flawed. If you’re after a coming-of-age story that feels like a betrayal wrapped in a summer romance, this one’s a slam dunk. Just don’t expect to trust anyone by the final chapter.
