Tamora Pierce’s narration is the first thing that grabs you—her voice is warm but unsentimental, with a gravelly edge that makes Daine’s trauma feel real. When Daine whispers to a wounded sparrow, Pierce’s tone is so tender it hurts. When she snarls at a condescending noble, you can hear the teeth in it. That rawness extends to the story itself. This isn’t a plot that waits for the heroine to ‘earn’ her power; Daine’s magic is as untamed as she is, and the book thrives in the chaos of her learning to control it (or not). The pacing stumbles slightly in the middle—there’s a stretch where the political intrigue of Tortall feels a bit like wheel-spinning compared to the electric charge of Daine’s early encounters with the wild. But when the story leans into its strengths (a battle sequence involving a *very* angry dragon is a masterclass in audio tension), it’s unforgettable. What really sold me, though, were the animals. Pierce doesn’t just write talking beasts; she writes *characters* who happen to have fur and feathers. The horse Cloud is more than a mount—he’s Daine’s first true ally, and their bond is rendered with such quiet depth that his injuries in one scene had me gripping my headphones. Even the villains (human and otherwise) avoid cartoonishness; their cruelty has roots in fear or ambition, not mustache-twirling evil. My one critique? The sound production is clean but *too* clean—this is a story that begs for ambient noise, the rustle of leaves or the distant howl of wolves, to deepen the immersion. Still, Pierce’s performance carries it. If you’re tired of fantasy where magic is neat and heroes are polished, *Wild Magic* is the antidote: a story about power that’s as feral as the girl who wields it.
