She’s not the usual ‘plucky but clumsy’ heroine; she’s a forensic scientist with a spine of steel, and her refusal to be intimidated (or seduced) by the posturing alphas makes every interaction crackle. Paige Tyler writes dialogue like a pro, especially the banter, which Abby Craden delivers with *chef’s kiss* precision. Craden’s Khaki is all wry exhaustion, while her male voices—particularly the team’s smug second-in-command—drip with just enough swagger to sell the fantasy without tipping into parody. The plot hums along like a well-oiled tactical op, though it’s not without stumbles. The middle act sags slightly under the weight of *just* one too many ‘will they/won’t they’ beats between Khaki and the team’s leader, and a subplot about a rogue shifter feels undercooked compared to the main mystery. That said, the action sequences are *brutal* in the best way—Craden’s pacing turns gunfights and chases into cinematic set pieces, and the sound design (subtle but effective) heightens the tension without overdoing it. What really stuck with me, though, was how the book treats Khaki’s competence as a given. She’s not ‘good for a human’—she’s just *good*, and the wolves have to earn her respect. In a genre often bogged down by power fantasies, that’s refreshingly real.
