Kevin Kasper saves this audiobook from becoming a grim slog through policy minutiae. His narration is the rare kind that feels both authoritative and intimate—like a trusted mentor walking you through the chaos instead of lecturing at you. The moments where he slows to emphasize a phrase (think the word 'Zeitenwende' itself) are masterful, turning what could’ve been a dense read into something compulsively listenable. My only gripe? The production occasionally falls victim to its own urgency. There are abrupt transitions between chapters that feel more like a hard cut than a natural segue, and a few audio artifacts (a faint hum on 'chapter five') snuck through. That said, these are minor sins in an otherwise gripping performance. Von Fritsch’s writing shines brightest when he’s dissecting Germany’s post-war identity crisis—his account of Olaf Scholz’s dithering during the first weeks of the war is downright chilling in its precision. The book’s power lies in its refusal to offer easy answers, which makes it all the more haunting. If you’re looking for a post-mortem on Ukraine, look elsewhere. This is a mirror held up to Europe in its darkest hour, and you’ll want to look.
