Hearing him narrate these pieces—especially the standout ‘Strung Out,’ a faux-memoir of a heroin-addicted violinist—is like eavesdropping on the world’s funniest therapy session. His delivery is *so* specific: the way he stretches vowels in mock-horror (‘*I* was the one who introduced *him* to the needle!’), or how he undercuts a grandiosely tragic line with a nasal ‘…yeah.’ It’s not just reading; it’s a one-man show where the jokes hide in the inflection. That said, this isn’t flawless. A few pieces (like the extended parody of literary criticism) drag where the satire feels too insular for modern listeners. And Allen’s schtick—brilliant as it is—can wear thin if you binge it; this is best consumed in short bursts, like a box of very rich, very dark chocolates. The production is barebones (no music, no frills), but that’s a feature, not a bug: the focus stays squarely on the text and that unmistakable voice. If you love comedy that’s equal parts cerebral and silly, or if you’ve ever wanted to hear a man sound *genuinely* offended by the concept of exercise, this is your audiobook. Just maybe skip the chapter on dentistry if you’re squeamish.
