What I got instead was a surprisingly layered listen, one that balances its soap-opera excess with moments of genuine pathos. Maryann Flood is a protagonist who *should* feel like a caricature—a woman who’s slept her way through New York’s underbelly before reinventing herself as a lawyer—but Robbins (and Godenius) sell her transformation with such gritty conviction that you’re rooting for her even when she’s at her most ruthless. The legal thriller elements are tight, but the real hook is the psychological chess match between Maryann and the men who’ve wronged her. When she finally corners her stepfather in a deposition, the tension is electric, and Godenius’ delivery makes the scene feel like a knife twist. That said, this isn’t a flawless audiobook. Robbins’ prose can veer into purple territory (there’s a *lot* of heaving bosoms and “smoldering gazes”), and Godenius occasionally leans too hard into the breathy, femme-fatale cadence during exposition, which can make the legal jargon feel like a parody. The production is clean, but the lack of distinct vocal characterizations for male characters means some dialogue-heavy scenes require extra attention to follow. Still, these quibbles fade next to the sheer *fun* of the listen. If you’ve ever wanted a thriller that’s equal parts *Erin Brockovich* and *Valley of the Dolls*, with a narrator who commits to the bit, this is your jam.
