AudioBook Atlas
I’ll admit, I went into *The Pirate* expecting something pulpy—maybe a bit of camp, a dash of old-school machismo. What I got instead was a masterclass in how to make geopolitical maneuvering *visceral*. Robbins doesn’t just tell you about the stakes; he makes you *feel* the sweat on a diplomat’s brow as he signs away a country’s future, or the dry click of a revolver’s hammer in a Beirut alley. The story spans decades, but it never drags because the characters are so damn *alive*—flawed, vengeful, and occasionally horrifying. Samir Al Fay, the Muslim doctor whose son becomes a pawn in this game, is a standout: a man whose idealism curdles into something darker, and Baker’s performance sells every nuance of that transformation.
That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. Robbins’ female characters often feel like afterthoughts—beautiful, tragic, or scheming, but rarely as fully realized as the men calling the shots. And while Baker’s narration is largely excellent, his delivery of the female voices occasionally slips into caricature, which grates in a story that’s otherwise so grounded. The production quality is solid, though the occasional abrupt shift in volume (especially during the more explosive scenes) had me fumbling for the volume knob. Still, these are minor quibbles. *The Pirate* is the kind of audiobook that lingers—like the scent of gunpowder or the echo of a bad deal. If you love thrillers that marry high-stakes espionage with raw, human greed, this is your next obsession."
