A Day to Fight

I picked up *A Day to Fight* expecting another derivative EMP thriller, but Hunt’s razor-focused storytelling blew that assumption out of the water. The book wastes almost no time setting the stage; within the first thirty minutes, the EMP hits, and we’re immediately thrown into the protagonist’s fight for survival. That’s no small feat in a genre often bogged down by setup, and it kept me locked in from start to finish. May’s narration deserves special praise—she doesn’t just read the lines; she embodies the protagonist’s fatigue, the survivors’ desperation, and the eerie quiet of a world gone dark. Her emotional range is impressive, and the subtle shifts in tone made even the quieter scenes feel charged. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. The secondary characters occasionally feel underdeveloped, their motivations skimmed over in favor of keeping the plot moving at a breakneck pace. A few key relationships needed more emotional weight to make their sacrifices land harder. Additionally, while the EMP premise is original enough, the resolution feels slightly rushed, as if Hunt was more interested in the immediate aftermath than the long-term rebuilding. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. The audiobook’s production is top-notch, with clear direction and minimal audio artifacts, making it a standout in a crowded genre. If you’re looking for dystopian sci-fi that respects your time and doesn’t waste a syllable, this is the one to pick.
