Monique Makena’s narration is the glue holding this audiobook together. She nails the duality of Ginny’s psyche—one moment a shell of a woman haunted by trauma, the next a woman clawing her way toward agency with surprising fierceness. The production quality is crisp, with no distracting artifacts, though the mid-book shift in pacing might frustrate listeners expecting relentless momentum. Flynn’s writing shines in the quieter moments, particularly Ginny’s strained conversations with her therapist, where the psychological weight feels devastatingly real. That said, the romance angle occasionally stumbles into melodrama, especially when Jason’s ‘love’ is framed as poignant rather than pathological. The ending, while thematically satisfying, left me questioning whether redemption or release was the true goal.
