The plot’s strength lies in its unpredictability—just when you think you’ve spotted the pattern, Lewis swerves into moral gray zones or outright betrayals. The action sequences are visceral, but it’s the *aftermath* that lingers: Jaco’s internal monologues, where Berkrot’s performance shines, sounding less like a hero and more like a man recalculating his own limits. That said, the pacing *does* stumble in the middle. A subplot involving a new faction feels undercooked compared to the core conflict, and Berkrot’s voice for one minor character veers into cartoonish territory—jarring against the otherwise grounded tone. Still, the audiobook’s production is impeccable: the sound mixing ensures combat scenes *punch* (literally—you’ll flinch at the blade impacts), and Berkrot’s ability to convey exhaustion through vocal texture is masterclass stuff. If you loved the first book’s blend of military sci-fi and existential dread, this doubles down—but be warned, it’s less a sequel and more a controlled detonation of everything that came before.
