I’ll admit, I side-eyed the Virtual Voice narrator at first. There’s an uncanny valley moment when a synthetic voice tries to sell you on a widow’s raw grief—but surprisingly, it works. The narration’s flat affect becomes a strength, mirroring Della’s detachment as she pokes at Clover’s secrets like a scab. The real star, though, is Harman’s knack for turning innocuous small-town interactions into landmines. A scene where Della “casually” questions a neighbor over lemon bars had me gripping my headphones; the dialogue is so *polite*, yet the subtext is a knife fight. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. The mystery’s breadcrumbs sometimes feel *too* scattered, like Harman’s so committed to the slow-burn vibe that she forgets to turn up the heat. And while the Ozark setting is atmospheric, it’s underutilized—more window dressing than character. Still, the final act delivers a twist that’s both earned and brutal, the kind that makes you replay earlier chapters with a sick sense of *of course*. If you like your cozies with a side of existential dread (and don’t mind a robot voice selling it), this is a dark little gem. Just don’t expect Miss Marple’s teacup charm—Della Fox is too busy staring into the void to pour tea.
