Der Rhythmus des Krieges

I’ve reviewed Sanderson’s work before, but *Der Rhythmus des Krieges* tested the limits of my patience—and I mean that as the highest praise. The first 10 hours? A slog. Sanderson’s love for meticulous lore and slow-burn character work can feel indulgent, especially in audio format where your commute becomes a masterclass in endurance. But then—*then*—the story clicks. Like a gear finally aligning in a storm-churned machinery of magic, the narrative accelerates into something unstoppable. Kaladin’s arc is brutal, heartbreaking, and ultimately triumphant in a way that feels earned. Shallan’s sections, meanwhile, are a masterclass in unreliable narration, her voice shifting with every revelation like a chameleon shedding skin. Detlef Bierstedt’s narration is the glue holding this marathon together. His voice for Kaladin crackles with exhaustion and determination, while his cadence for Dalinar is regal and weary. The German delivery adds a layer of gravitas that elevates the source material—these aren’t just characters; they’re legends in the making. That said, the production isn’t flawless. Some storm sequences lack the immersive rumble I’ve heard in other audiobooks, and the chapter breaks occasionally feel jarring when Sanderson’s chapters bleed into each other like a single, unbroken storm front. Still, by the final act, when the winds howl and the magic surges, I found myself holding my breath. This isn’t just a good audiobook—it’s a commitment. But if you’re willing, it rewards you with one of Sanderson’s most ambitious, emotionally raw narratives to date.
