Where the book stumbles is in its reliance on a few too-familiar tropes: the sceptical outsider detective, the tight-knit village united by silence, the ‘hidden attic’ reveal. It’s not groundbreaking, but it *is* effective, especially in audio. The production’s subtle use of sound design (the creak of an old farm gate, the whisper of wind through barley) adds a layer of unease that the text alone might not. My biggest critique? The ending feels a bit too neat for a story that’s otherwise comfortable wallowing in decay.
