It’s the rare audiobook that makes me believe in dragons again. Robert G. Davis’s narration alone elevates this from ‘fun distraction’ to ‘must-listen.’ His portrayal of Arulean Black is achingly vulnerable, a dragon who’s lost not just his wings but his purpose, and Davis’s voice cracks just enough during the darker moments to make you ache for him. The historian, Elias, is his perfect foil—sharp-witted and stubborn, with Davis giving him a cadence that’s all nervous energy and dry humor. Their chemistry crackles, but the real magic here is the slow burn of their relationship, built on trust and fire rather than instant attraction. My only gripe? Harris’s worldbuilding sometimes leans too hard on exposition. I craved more scenes of dragon flight or the human world’s reactions to their presence, but the payoff in emotional stakes makes up for it. The pacing, too, stumbles slightly in the middle act, feeling a tad dragged before the finale’s explosive climax. Still, Davis’s performance sells every moment, and by the time Arulean and Elias’s bond ignites, you’ll be clinging to the edge of your seat.
