I’ll be honest: *Knight of Shadows* frustrated me at first. Kade drops you into the deep end of a fractured kingdom with minimal hand-holding, and Rezkin’s near-superhuman competence can feel *too* effortless in early chapters. But by the time the pieces start moving—oh, it *clicks*. This is a story about the cost of being three steps ahead of everyone else, and Podehl’s narration sells it perfectly. His Rezkin is a chilling blend of calm and menace, but it’s his work with secondary characters (particularly the fiery Lira and the weary Captain Farson) that gives the audiobook its emotional weight. The pacing is where this shines. Kade balances large-scale warfare with intimate betrayals, and the audiobook’s editing keeps the tension tight—no meandering subplots here. That said, the magic system remains frustratingly vague (a deliberate choice, but one that occasionally undercuts the stakes), and some of Rezkin’s victories rely on off-screen genius that borders on *deus ex machina*. Still, the final act’s convergence of plotlines is so satisfying, I immediately rewound to catch the foreshadowing I’d missed. If you love antiheroes who play the long game—and narrators who make every whispered threat land like a dagger—this is a standout. Just brace yourself for a protagonist who’ll make you question whether you *should* be rooting for him.
