Her classroom disasters (a fay in a fireball, anyone?) are so specific and well-timed that they feel like the work of a writer who’s genuinely delighted by the chaos of her own creation. The romance subplot, when it arrives, is sweet but never sappy, and the magical system—while not as rigid as some—feels intuitive enough that Linden’s struggles make sense. My only real critique? A few side characters, like the stern headmistress, could’ve used more dimension to avoid feeling like walking plot devices. Sandlin’s narration is a masterclass in voice acting for YA. She switches between Linden’s internal monologue—full of sarcastic asides—and her external reactions with effortless precision, making even the drier moments feel alive. The fay’s dialogue, in particular, is a standout; Sandlin’s ability to convey mischief and menace in a single breath is nothing short of magical.
