I approached *Le Puits de l'ascension* expecting the same kinetic energy as the first *Mistborn* trilogy, but Sanderson throws a curveball: this book feels like a sequel in name only. The Lord Ruler’s fall isn’t the happy ending it seems; it’s the trigger for a power vacuum that breeds warring factions, shattered faith, and moral reckoning. Sanderson’s worldbuilding here is almost overwhelming—every chapter peels back another layer of the magic system’s rules, leaving me scrambling to keep up, but in the best possible way. Steve Driesen’s narration is the secret weapon. Where some narrators stumble over Sanderson’s dense prose, Driesen *swoops* through it, his voice shifting from raspy gravitas to chirpy irreverence in a single line. His portrayal of Vin—now stripped of her heroic aura—is especially compelling; she’s not the chosen one anymore, just a woman trying to survive in a world that’s rewritten itself around her absence. That said, the pacing occasionally stalls in the middle act. Sanderson’s philosophical detours (looking at you, Sazed’s endless epistles) drag the momentum down, and Driesen’s performance can’t fully rescue them. The audiobook’s runtime is brutal—30 hours and change—but the payoff is worth it. By the final act, when empires clash and characters confront the true cost of their choices, I found myself breathless, pausing to process the weight of what I’d just heard. This isn’t just a fantasy novel; it’s a meditation on revolution, and Driesen’s narration turns it into an immersive, exhausting, and ultimately transcendent experience.
