His pacing is masterful: slow and smoky during the setup, then tightening like a noose as the scheme unravels. When the protagonist’s voice cracks with panic in the final act, Butler doesn’t overplay it; he lets the silence between words do the heavy lifting. It’s a rare performance that feels both effortless and meticulously crafted. The story itself is a masterclass in economic storytelling. Block wastes zero time on atmospheric filler—every scene either advances the con or deepens the paranoia. That said, the middle act sags *just* slightly when the mechanics of the scam get a little too intricate (I found myself rewinding once or twice to untangle the shell companies). And while the ending is satisfyingly bleak, it lacks the gut-punch twist of Block’s best work; the tragedy here is quieter, more inevitable.
