I dove into *Sammelband 1* expecting a dated German space opera, but what emerged was a pulse-pounding, sprawling saga that somehow feels both timeless and urgently modern. The narration team deserves serious credit—Gregor Höppner, in particular, nails Perry Rhodan’s weary but determined tone, making the character’s leadership feel earned rather than forced. The audiobook’s pacing is its strongest suit: long stretches of quiet character development are punctuated by sudden, explosive revelations or battles that hit like a freight train. The production team also deserves applause for avoiding the common pitfall of overusing sound effects; the music and ambiance are present but never distracting. That said, the sheer density of lore and characters can feel overwhelming at times. Some factions and plot threads are underdeveloped in this first volume, leaving you hungry for more context that isn’t delivered until later installments. And while the ensemble narration works brilliantly overall, a few voice actors occasionally slip into overly theatrical cadences that clash with the story’s more grounded moments. These are minor quibbles, though—by the final chapter, I was fully invested in the saga and already hunting for the next Sammelband. If you love sci-fi that rewards deep engagement, this is a must-listen.
