As an editor who’s listened to more than my share of Christian fiction that leans too hard on its moral compass, *Rocky Road Dreams* surprised me by how effortlessly it balanced its themes of faith and healing without ever feeling preachy. Virtual Voice’s narration is a masterclass in subtlety—no over-the-top accents or dramatic flourishes, just a steady, conversational tone that feels like sitting across from a good friend and hearing their story over coffee. Kyle’s voice, in particular, is achingly human, his frustration and love for his distant father palpable in every pause. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its hiccups. The production occasionally feels like it could’ve used a touch more polish—there’s one jarring edit where a sentence is clipped a beat too early, and the audio compression is just shy of distracting during quieter moments. Still, these are minor quirks in an otherwise immersive experience. Where the story truly shines is in its secondary characters, like Kyle’s childhood friend, whose memories of his mother provide the only real anchor to Kyle’s past. The candy shop setting, while charming, sometimes feels underutilized, and I found myself wishing for more vivid descriptions of the confections that tie this family’s story together. But these critiques don’t detract from the novel’s emotional core—a testament to Dowdy’s skill at making small, personal moments feel universal.
