About This Audiobook

Imagine a 2053 where magic bleeds through the cracks of reality, and the Fey walk among us—not as distant legends, but as living, breathing forces shaping our world. In *Shade King*, William Stacey doesn’t just borrow from folklore; he torches it, leaving behind a smoldering landscape of corrupted rituals, rogue sorcerers, and a creeping dread that something ancient is waking up—and it doesn’t care if humanity survives. Stacey’s worldbuilding is the kind that lingers: a near-future Chicago overrun by spectral gangs, a cryptic ‘Awakened’ underclass, and a protagonist whose powers come with a price. It’s *The Magicians* meets *Blade Runner* with a shot of espresso—dark, sharp, and impossible to put down.

The audiobook’s strength lies in its unapologetic weirdness. Stacey’s prose crackles with wit and grit, avoiding the pitfalls of over-explaining magic systems while still making every spell feel dangerous and unpredictable. The narration by Chelsea Stephens is a masterclass in tonal balance: her voice oscillates between gritty cynicism and eerie musicality, whether she’s voicing a snarky urban mage or a Fey lord dripping with menace. The pacing never drags, even in the denser lore dumps, and Stephens’ ability to sell both snark and terror makes this audiobook feel like a blockbuster in audio form.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical going into *Shade King*. Urban fantasy with a 2053 twist? It’s a crowded shelf. But William Stacey pulls off something rare: a story that feels both fresh and familiar, like finding a hidden door in a well-trodden hallway. Chelsea Stephens’ narration is the icing on the cake—her vocal range sells the absurdity of magic gone mainstream while keeping the stakes high. She nails the rhythm of Stacey’s snappy dialogue, especially in scenes with the protagonist’s snarky street crew, but where she truly shines is in the darker moments. Her voice for the Fey is haunting, dripping with a casual cruelty that makes you flinch. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The mid-section sags slightly with worldbuilding exposition, and there were a few instances where the audio quality dipped—minor, but noticeable on headphones. The ending also feels rushed, as if Stacey was so focused on the journey he forgot to give the climax the weight it deserved. Still, these are nitpicks in an otherwise stellar production. If you crave urban fantasy that doesn’t treat you like a child, with magic that’s messy, dangerous, and utterly unpredictable, *Shade King* is your next obsession. Just don’t listen alone at night—the Fey sound *too* real in the dark.
