About This Audiobook

Peter Grainger's 'Songbird' is a gripping, late-night listen that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Detective Sergeant Chris Waters, our reluctant hero, is thrust into the deep end of a complex murder case, with only his wits and instincts to guide him. Grainger's prose is lean and muscular, with a unique ability to evoke the eerie stillness of a crime scene and the creeping dread that follows. What sets this audiobook apart is its slow-burn tension, like a coiled spring ready to snap, and the intricate web of secrets that Waters must unravel. Gildart Jackson's narration is a perfect complement, his calm, measured voice capturing Waters' quiet determination and the creeping unease of a case that's far from straightforward.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I devoured 'Songbird' in a single, sleepless night. Gildart Jackson's narration is a masterclass in understatement, his subtle shifts in tone and pace perfectly mirroring the story's slow-burn suspense. He brings a quiet intensity to Detective Waters, making him a relatable everyman hero, and his ability to convey the chilling atmosphere of a crime scene is nothing short of exceptional. The story itself is a cleverly plotted puzzle, with a satisfyingly complex web of suspects and motives. My only critique is that some of the red herrings feel a little too obvious, but this is a minor quibble in an otherwise outstanding audiobook. If you're a fan of slow-burn mysteries with a dark heart, 'Songbird' is an absolute must-listen.
