About This Audiobook

DI Blackwell’s eighth case isn’t just another body in the Thames—it’s a high-wire act of forensic ingenuity and psychological chess that keeps you guessing until the final chapter. Brolly crafts a procedural that feels like a graduate seminar in criminal psychology: the victim’s last moments are dissected like a frog on a lab table, every clue a potential misdirection, every witness a suspect in disguise. The body was found on the bridge, but the real crime scene is the murky past connecting three seemingly unrelated people. If you’ve ever wanted a mystery that rewards close listening with fresh revelations on repeat listens, this is your audiobook.

What sets this apart is Brolly’s refusal to dumb down the detective work—no magic hunch moments, just methodical deduction married to plausible behavioral science. The bridge itself becomes a character, a conduit for secrets that surface only under pressure, and the tension mounts like a rising tide on shaky planks. Cohen’s narration is the secret weapon: her DI Blackwell sounds exhausted and razor-sharp at once, her voice dropping an octave for suspects and snapping up for forensic detail. The audiobook’s pace never drags despite the intricate plotting, and the production captures the claustrophobic hum of a Met police station at 3 a.m., making every page turn feel like a near miss.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to eight DI Blackwell novels before this one, and I’ll admit I was starting to think the series was running on autopilot. But “The Bridge” is the comeback story I didn’t know I needed. Danielle Cohen’s performance is the difference-maker—she nails the weary authority of a detective who’s seen too much without ever tipping into parody. Her Blackwell isn’t a quippy genius; she’s a real person whose patience frays when the facts refuse to align. Cohen also crushes the side characters: every constable, lawyer, and grieving relative sounds like a flesh-and-blood person rather than a plot prop. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The first act’s backstory dumps weigh down the opener, and at one point a critical clue is revealed in a throwaway line that demands a rewind—frustrating when you’re driving. Still, the payoff is worth the stumbles: the third-act confrontation on the bridge is one of the most satisfying set pieces Brolly’s written, and Cohen’s vocal shift to near-whisper for the big reveal sent a literal shiver down my spine. If you’re a fan of authentic procedurals where the detective’s brain is the real mystery, this is the audiobook you’ve been waiting for.
