About This Audiobook

*The Mark* isn’t just another police procedural—it’s a slow-burn mystery that weaponizes atmosphere. Matt Brolly drops you into Weston-super-Mare, a faded seaside town where the salt air feels like a character itself, and a drug addict wakes up on the beach with a ritualistic carving no one can explain. What follows isn’t just a hunt for a suspect but a descent into the kind of quiet, creeping dread that lingers long after the last chapter. The real hook? The symbol. Brolly treats it like a puzzle box, doling out clues with surgical precision while letting the town’s secrets fester in the background.

Danielle Cohen’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon—her voice carries the weight of a detective who’s seen too much, but she never overplays the grit. Instead, she lets the tension simmer in her pacing, turning even mundane police interviews into moments of unease. This isn’t a thriller that relies on jump scares or breakneck action; it’s a methodical, almost hypnotic unraveling of a community’s hidden rot. If you love procedurals where the setting is as compelling as the crime, this one will burrow under your skin.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I went into *The Mark* expecting a by-the-numbers British crime novel, but what I got was far more interesting—a procedural that’s equal parts *Broadchurch* and *True Detective*, with a dash of folk horror lurking at the edges. Brolly’s strength lies in his restraint; he resists the urge to over-explain the symbol’s meaning, letting the ambiguity gnaw at you. The investigation, led by DS Louise Blackwell, feels grounded in real police work (no superhuman detective tropes here), but the town’s eerie undercurrent—hinted at through local myths and the victim’s fractured memories—keeps it from ever feeling routine. Danielle Cohen’s performance is *almost* flawless. Her Blackwell is weary but sharp, and she nails the regional accents without slipping into caricature. My only critique? A few secondary characters blend together vocally in the audiobook’s middle stretch—it’s hard to distinguish some of the male witnesses when the dialogue gets rapid-fire. That said, the production quality is crisp, and Cohen’s delivery of the book’s final act is chilling, especially in a scene where the symbol’s origin is (partially) revealed. Pacing-wise, the first third takes its time, but the payoff is worth it if you’re patient. This isn’t a thriller for listeners who want constant action, but if you crave mood, mystery, and a narrator who understands how to let silence do the work, *The Mark* delivers in spades.
