I was hooked from the first chapter. Jennings' narration is so engaging, I felt like I was sitting across from Annie, sharing a cup of coffee as she recounted her tale. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the tension to build like a slow tide, until it washes over you in a wave of 'I-need-to-know-what-happens-next'. Weisel's writing is so evocative, I could practically see the dust motes dancing in the sunlight as Annie cleaned the house, trying to make sense of Paul's disappearance. My only critique? I wish there had been a bit more depth to the secondary characters. But that's a minor quibble in an otherwise outstanding audiobook. If you're looking for a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end, The Day He Left is your next must-listen.
