I’ll admit, I approached *The Feedback Loop* skeptical of yet another ‘trapped in a game’ premise, but Cooper’s twist—making the Loop feel less like a game and more like a bureaucratic hellscape—hooked me fast. Quantum isn’t a chosen one; he’s a guy who’s been broken by the system long before we meet him, and Hays’ performance sells that exhaustion. His delivery is *perfectly* uneven—sometimes slurring words like a man half-asleep, other times snapping into hyper-articulate rage when Quantum rails against the Loop’s cruelty. The sound design is equally sharp: subtle audio cues for ‘system messages’ avoid gimmickry, and the occasional distortion during glitches makes you feel the world warping around you. That said, the pacing stumbles in Volume 2, where Cooper leans too hard into repetitive ‘day in the life’ cycles. The humor (like Quantum’s snarky item descriptions) starts to wear thin when the plot treads water, and Hays’ NPC voices—brilliant at first—become slightly grating in longer exchanges. Still, the payoff in Volumes 3 and 4 justifies the slog, especially once the Loop’s *real* rules start unraveling. This isn’t a power fantasy; it’s a story about what happens when the grind *wins*. If you love cyberpunk that’s more *Neuromancer* than *Ready Player One*, and narration that feels like a full-cast production without the gimmicks, this is your fix. Just don’t start it before bed—Quantum’s paranoia is contagious.
