The Healer's Way

I went into *The Healer’s Way* expecting another grimdark fantasy with healing as a side note, but Sapphire flipped the script in the best way. Mikhail isn’t a reluctant savior—he’s a man whose power is as much a curse as a gift, and the story leans into that ambiguity. Jonathan Johns’ narration sells it; his voice for Mikhail is hoarse with exhaustion but sharp with intelligence, and his delivery of the Family’s internal squabbles had me laughing out loud. The magic system, rooted in blood and trade-offs, feels fresh, and the way Sapphire ties personal vendettas to larger political schemes is masterful. That said, the worldbuilding isn’t perfect. The first act meanders a bit as Sapphire establishes the rules of his magic and power structures, which might frustrate listeners who prefer instant immersion. And while Johns’ performance is stellar, some minor characters blend together, making it hard to track alliances. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. By the midpoint, I was fully invested in Mikhail’s desperate gambits, and the audiobook’s production quality—crisp dialogue, immersive sound design—elevates the tension. If you’re tired of fantasy where the hero’s main skill is swinging a sword, here’s your antidote.
