I’ll admit, I approached *The Merchant Murderers* skeptical of yet another ‘rogue in Tudor England’ tale—but Michael Jecks and Kris Dyer won me over in the first 20 minutes. Dyer’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon: his Jack Blackjack is a delightful mess of bravado and vulnerability, the kind of narrator you’d follow into a back-alley brawl just to hear his next quip. The voice work extends beyond the protagonist, too; Dyer’s ability to switch between Blackjack’s cockney-tinged sarcasm and the clipped, icy tones of the merchant elite adds layers to what could’ve been a one-note farce. The production quality is flawless—no distracting edits or volume spikes—letting the story’s dark energy take center stage. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. Jecks’ plot occasionally stumbles under the weight of its own twists; a mid-book detour involving a shipyard feels like padding, and the religious tensions (while historically accurate) sometimes slow the momentum. And while Dyer’s pacing is generally excellent, his delivery of female characters occasionally veers into caricature—particularly the more scheming wives, who get a breathy, over-emphasized treatment that grates. Still, these are minor quibbles in an audiobook that otherwise nails its vibe: a cross between *The Lies of Locke Lamora* and *Wolf Hall*, if Hilary Mantel had a taste for tavern brawls. If you love antiheroes with sharp tongues, a setting that oozes atmosphere, and narration that makes a 400-year-old con feel fresh, this is your next obsession.
