His voice is the audiobook’s secret weapon: he captures Jasper’s teenage prickliness with a mix of snark and exhaustion, making his occasional moments of tenderness feel earned, not saccharine. The pacing is tight, though I did find the final act’s resolution rushed—some key emotional beats felt glossed over in service of wrapping up the trilogy’s loose ends. Where *True Son* truly shines is in its refusal to give easy answers. Jasper’s journey isn’t about saving the world; it’s about figuring out who he is when the world’s systems have failed him. The factions—the Psi Corps and their opposition—are painted in shades of gray, which is refreshing for a genre often obsessed with clear villains. Podehl handles the dialogue brilliantly, especially in scenes where Jasper’s sarcasm masks deeper pain. My only real critique? The world-building occasionally assumes too much prior knowledge from listeners unfamiliar with the trilogy’s first two books, leaving some political context feeling under-explained. That said, the audiobook’s energy and Podehl’s performance make it a standout listen for anyone craving a dystopian story with heart.
