Virtual Voice nails the narration in *What Survives the Fall*, but not without a few hiccups. Lisa’s voice is a masterclass in weary resilience—when she’s not spiraling into jagged panic, she sounds like someone who’s spent years stitching herself back together with duct tape and denial. The real star, though, is the unnamed antagonist’s voice: a chilling, distorted whisper that slithers through the audio like static on an old radio. The effect is genuinely unsettling, even if the effect wears thin after the third ‘you can’t outrun me’ taunt. Pacing is another standout. The dual timeline could easily collapse under the weight of its own twists, but Cross keeps the tension taut, doling out reveals like a magician pulling razor blades from sleeves. My only beef? Some of the emotional beats land with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Lisa’s grief, when it surfaces, feels less like a wound and more like a drum solo—loud, inevitable, and hard to ignore. Still, the audiobook’s production elevates the material. The absence of background music in key scenes forces you to lean in, and the occasional echo on the ‘ghost’s’ lines adds a layer of dread that lingers long after the credits roll. If you’re here for slow-burn psychological horror with a side of existential dread, this one’s a knockout—just don’t expect subtlety in the scares.
